The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has conducted an investigation in Cieza to clarify a series of irregularities related to mandatory vehicle insurance. This investigation has culminated in the arrest of an insurance agent, suspected of committing fraud and document falsification.
To date, officers from the Civil Guard's Investigation Area have identified around twenty cases in which the now-detained man allegedly collected insurance claims but had not formalized payment with the insurance company.
The investigation began when a resident of Cieza reported a possible scam to the Civil Guard. The victim stated that he had been reported by a patrol of the Civil Guard for driving his vehicle without insurance, according to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) database, despite having a policy proving his insurance.
The Civil Guard investigation is activated.
The Civil Guard launched the corresponding investigation to verify and, if necessary, clarify the facts. They found irregularities in the complainant's insurance contract and also detected additional cases similar to the first.
As the investigation progressed, the Civil Guard's Citizen Security Prevention officers confirmed the existence of more victims, a significant number of cases involving compulsory automobile insurance policies that were not listed in the databases, and all of them had one thing in common: the insurance agent.
The irregularity involved the insurance broker, in his commercial role, taking out policies with clients, charging them the amount agreed upon in the contract, but the insurance agent kept the money and did not transfer it to the company. In some cases, he would apply for insurance for one day and then cancel it or simply not apply at all.
The suspect carried out different modes of use
As a result of the investigation, the Civil Guard confirmed that the suspect used various modus operandi for the same purpose. In some cases, he altered or modified the information on the insurance policy document. To do so, he used the personal data of other people, which he had fraudulently acquired. On other occasions, he collected the insurance amount by hand or provided his personal account number without actually paying it to the insurance company.
Having obtained all the necessary evidence, the Civil Guard has located and arrested the suspect, the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of fraud and document forgery.
Twenty victims of these criminal acts
The Civil Guard continues its open investigation to determine if there are more than twenty victims of the now-clarified criminal activity.
During the investigation, the Civil Guards found that some of the victims were driving their vehicles without any problem, even though they had paid for and subscribed to an insurance policy, with the risk that this entails in the event of a traffic accident.
