The Serreta Cave-Simme is located on the left bank of the Almadenes Canyon, open to the Segura River, in a magnificent landscape of great visual impact and practically inaccessible from the outside. The Serreta Cave-Simme, as we say, is located within the Almadenes Canyon. This cave-simme has difficult access via a spiral metal staircase. Inside, it houses the only known Roman habitat and house in the Levant within a cave.
We can see well-preserved schematic cave paintings dating back to the Eneolithic period, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.
La Serreta has been a silent witness to the evolution of the human groups that have occupied its depths since prehistory and until recent times, at different levels of cultural occupation belonging tobefore the Neolithic, Romanization and the Islamic Middle Ages, turning it into a Rock Art Sanctuary, a Neolithic habitat and a late Roman refuge.
The cave contains more than fifty rock art figures spread across two panels, most of them belonging to Schematic Art. The good state of preservation of the paintings, the large number of figures depicted, and the exceptional nature of some of them, both for their particular typology and the pictorial treatment they display, contribute to classifying the Serreta Cave-Simna as one of the most significant rock art sites in Murcia and throughout eastern Spain.
Under a level of medieval Islamic occupation of the 10th-12th centuries, the remains of two superimposed constructions from the Roman period appeared, used successively within the second half of the 3rd century AD. During this period, the cavity was occupied by a small group of Hispano-Romans who, fleeing from the civil war that the empire was experiencing in the period known as "military anarchy", sought refuge in this place, carrying out within it the only Roman construction inside a cave documented until now in Spain.
The cave is open to visitors year-round, with guided tours available. Its entire interior has been renovated to create access to the Roman house, as well as to the balcony where you can admire the Almadenes Canyon from within. This is undoubtedly a unique and unforgettable experience for everyone, and we invite you to join us.
