Cieza City Council continues to advance its comprehensive pest control model without phytosanitary products, a firm commitment to sustainability, public health, and the improvement of urban biodiversity, in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030, which set a goal of reducing the use of chemical pesticides by 50% by 2030.

This strategy, which the municipality has been implementing for years, is based on biological control through the controlled release of beneficial insects, such as hoverflies and ladybugs, which act naturally on the main pests affecting trees and urban green spaces.

In recent weeks, municipal services have intensified these releases in various areas of the municipality, paying particular attention to parks, gardens, and street tree lines. The use of natural enemies such as ladybugs and hoverflies eliminates the need for phytosanitary products, thus reducing the risks to public health and the impact on the environment.

Reinforcement with complementary actions with plant strata

The strategy is reinforced with other complementary actions, such as promoting lower vegetation layers and increasing plant diversity in urban spaces, following the example of recent interventions on Camino de Madrid, Avenida Juan XXIII Norte, and Camino de Murcia. These actions promote the presence of pollinators, such as wild bees and butterflies, which are essential for ecological balance and the improvement of the urban landscape. These measures benefit not only the city but also local agriculture.

With all this, the Cieza City Council reaffirms its commitment to a healthier, more biodiverse, and livable city, aligned with European recommendations on environmental health and ecological management of public spaces. This comprehensive approach is not a passing trend, but the result of years of work and experience applying environmentally friendly methodologies.

The city council encourages citizens to learn about and appreciate these initiatives, which make Cieza a benchmark in urban environmental care from an innovative and responsible perspective.
